Prescription Drug Take Back Events On The Rise
Oct 1st 2012, 01:11

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – Prescription drug abuse kills more than twice as many people as drunk drivers in Colorado. That’s why prescription drug take back events are on the rise.

Bottles of pills and other unused prescription drugs were collected in Aurora and all over the Denver metro area Saturday. It’s part of yet another drug take back event, keeping the materials from falling into the wrong hands.

“I wanted to do this because I didn’t want to throw it in the trash and I didn’t want to throw it in the toilet,” Susan Barocas said.

Saturday’s event allowed people to discard of their prescriptions with no questions asked. The events are important in helping prevent prescription drug abuse and water contamination.

Local agencies made the event simple. Drivers pulled up to a drug take back location and handed over their prescriptions.

“I just like to see how people are reassured to bring their meds out and know they’re doing the right thing,” volunteer Steve Perry said. “Overall it’s just a good community safety program when you see all the narcotics people are bringing in.”

Bringing the drugs in keeps them off the streets.

The head of Reuters' Tehran bureau chief Parisa Hafezi could be looking at jail time after a special media court found her guilty of "spreading lies" with a February video about Iranian women in martial arts training. The headline to the accompanying story originally said "Thousands of female Ninjas train as Iran's assassins" before Reuters toned it down read "Three thousand women Ninjas train in Iran," after the martial arts club where the video was filmed complained to the Irani government that it was inaccurate. It turns out that these women weren't actually training to become throwing star-toting, samurai sword-swinging killers. They were just looking for a creative way to get into shape.

This sort of offense is taken pretty seriously in Iran. When the story first stirred up trouble earlier this year, Iran stripped all of Reuters journalists their of their press credentials and ejected them from the country. With the exception of Hafezi, an Iranian citizen, the whole bureau has been working from Dubai for the past eight months. Hafezi stayed behind to face the music and now awaits sentencing and a final verdict from a judge which is scheduled for later this week. Hafezi was found guilty of "propaganda against the regime" and "publishing false information in an effort to disturb public opinion." The punishment for similar media-related offenses by local media outlets include fines or imprisonment.

Let it be known that Iran is not embarrassed about its female ninjas. In fact, they seem quite proud. The state-run station Press TV even ran a special about the trend not too long ago. And frankly, it looks kind of awesome.

Bet You're Not Worried About It

Written by Dr. Dave Hnida, CBS4 Medical EditorAnd for good reason. The past two flu seasons have been weaklings. Fewer deaths, fewer hospitalizations, and fewer illnesses.

So it’s easy to say: what’s all the fuss about influenza this year?

A couple of reasons. First, flu seasons tend to come in cycles. A few bad. A few easy. The back to the few bad. And that’s where it looks like we are at.

Second, the strains out there are new and mutated, including one in the H3N2 family (a nasty one), which none of us have seen before. That means our immune systems haven’t seen them, so we don’t have much natural defense against them.

Who needs a flu shot? The CDC says… everyone. We all could benefit from an immunization, even those young, healthy, and stud-like when it comes to health. It’s not funny, but it’s amazing to see some tough guy lying on the stretcher in the ER with a bad case of flu, and telling the now not-so-tough-guy, “Sorry, drink plenty of fluids, take come Tylenol, rest, and you’ll feel better in two-three weeks. And come back if you get symptoms of pneumonia.”

Those at highest risk are children, people over 60, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions. Keep in mind, it’s not the flu itself that gets you, but it’s complications because of the stress it puts on the body: dehydration, pneumonia, miscarriage, heart attack, and stroke.

BTW, remember it’s aint Vegas. It’s your life we’re talking about here and playing the odds aren’t good if you roll snake-eyes and get sick. Immunization rates of kids are only 52%. Adults, an even worse 39%.

The vaccine won’t make you sick (contrary to rumors, myths, and coincidence), and if you hate needles, you may be able to get vaccine through a squirt up your nostrils. That one is good for healthy ages 2-49. The rest of us can roll up our sleeves.

And if you’re wondering, the rate for doctors is 89%. It could be better, but even some of us are knuckleheads. But I’m not one. I get my vaccine next week.

Officials Warn About Presidential Debate Ticket Scams
Sep 30th 2012, 23:10

DENVER (CBS4) – The University of Denver says be on the lookout for people trying to sell tickets to next week’s presidential debate.

Wednesday’s debate could be the most watched event on the planet and organizers are making sure it’s an invitation only event.

The debates are the hardest events to see during a presidential campaign, and there is no shortage of people who will do almost anything to get in.

The Ritchie Center is the heart of the DU campus. In preparation for the first presidential debate, it’s become a dead end and the most exclusive venue in the country.

“This is history in the making right here,” DU senior Elle Mohs said.

Mohs is one of the thousands of students hoping to win one of about 200 invitations to watch the debate in person.

“The more events you attended on campus leading up to the debate, the more chances you got your name in the lottery,” Mohs said.

On Craigslist, postings offer hundreds of dollars to the opportunity to buy one of the coveted tickets. The university posted their own warning that the listings are as good as scams. There are no ticket sales to the debate — only a handful of invitations given to each campaign and the host university.

“We make very sure whoever the ticket is issued to, that’s who attends the debate,” Peter Eyre with the Presidential Debate Commission said. “This is one of the larger venues that we’ve done.”

Eyre has helped turn Magness Arena from a 7,000-seat stadium to a hall that will only accommodate a few hundred.

“The security will be very tight. This will be a very secure, highly locked down campus come Wednesday on debate day,” Eyre said.

A seat at the debate a rare privilege — one that not even money can buy.

The commission is essentially turning the Ritchie Center into a massive TV set. It won’t be finished until a day before the debate. Organizers do not even know how many people will be able to see the debate in person until Monday at the earliest.

14-Year-Old Saves Mother From Burning Home
Sep 30th 2012, 22:48

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – A 14-year-old is being called a hero after he saved his mother and another person from their burning home.

The fire happened Saturday morning in Steamboat Springs. It started in a hallway of a duplex and set off the smoke detector. Dillon Silcox heard the alarm, but his mother didn’t.

The flames kept Silcox from reaching her bedroom door, so he improvised.

“I jumped out my window and I ran to my mom’s window, told her to wake up that there was a fire, and I ran to the neighbor’s door to let her know there was a fire,” he said.

Silcox’s mother says the fire was close to the gas furnace. She also says they just replaced the battery in the smoke detector last week.

Crews were able to contain the damage to the inside of the house. It’s not clear how it started.

Breckenridge Tries To Stop Illegal Ski Lessons
Sep 30th 2012, 22:29

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) – The Breckenridge Ski Area has a problem on its hands heading into ski season as people are giving ski lessons illegally. Now the town may step in to help.

The police department said it’s about safety, but one thing that’s unique with Breckenridge is that the base areas are within the town limits, so while it’s a federal violation right now, the town also wants to make it illegal.

“It’s amazing how many people do advertise, especially on sights like Craigslist, and the ski areas monitor that,” Assistant Police Chief Greg Morrison said.

Breckenridge Ski Area and the town want to crack down even harder on the dangerous niche industry. Illegal ski lessons are a federal crime because it happens on Forest Service property. But with few law enforcement officers around the ski resorts in the winter, it’s also a hard crime to catch.

“It’s total common sense. It’s better for everybody. The Forest Service, they support it also,” Morrison said.

Morrison told CBS4 about a case last year where a family paid $400 for an illegal private lesson.

“Pretty soon they came to the attention of the Ski Patrol who found out here are these people up in an advanced area who obviously couldn’t ski down,” Morrison said. “Any of them could have easily been hurt.”

What makes the violation an even bigger logistical nightmare is that cases are heard in federal court.

“They would all have to drive to either Denver or Grand Junction for federal court, whereby having it in municipal court it stays right here in Breckenridge.”

With a hefty fine and even jail time, the police think the law would eliminate the few people who think about breaking the law.

“It has good teeth in it and this also allows us to do stings a little more readily.”

It’s not quite singed into the town’s law yet, but the resort and the police department said they’re hoping it will be in place for opening day on Nov. 19.
