Details are slowly emerging about an unsettling incident involving Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, his girlfriend and a morning full of violence. According to the Kansas City Star, Belcher shot his girlfriend multiple times this morning, while her mother watched, and then drove to the team's practice facility at Arrowhead Stadium, where he shot and killed himself.

It's unclear what sparked the incident earlier this morning and exactly what happened at the stadium. Reports say that Belcher attracted attention from stadium security when he parked "oddly." A phalanx of teammates and coaches, including general manager Scott Pioli, approached the car to find Belcher sitting inside with a gun to his head. BuzzFeed reports that Belcher "thanked them for everything they'd all done for him" and then pulled the trigger. Police say that Belcher was in a car with a gun to his head and talking to his coaches when they arrived.

The 25-year-old Belcher was a four-year veteran of the Chiefs, who have the worst record of any team in the NFL. In a brief statement, the team said simply, "We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation." So far, they're still set to play the Caroline Panthers at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

Winds Spur Fire Evacuations In Rocky Mountain National Park
Dec 1st 2012, 17:13

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colo. (AP) — Evacuations have been ordered in the resort town of Estes Park after high winds stoked the Fern Lake Fire in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said early Saturday that the evacuation was in place for Highway 66 and all adjacent streets; High Drive and all adjacent streets; and Marys Lake Road. The National Parks Service says the east side of Rocky Mountain park is also closed.

The fire has charred nearly 2½ square miles. Containment was listed at 40 percent Friday.

The National Weather Service says gusts of 50 mph are possible early Saturday with most places seeing gusts closer to 30 mph. The winds will relax in the afternoon.

The fire started Oct. 9. The cause is still under investigation.

After days of stalling, Congo's M23 rebels finally made their withdrawal from the eastern city of Goma, not far from the Rwandan border, on Saturday. Their nearly two-week-long occupation there was marked first by death and violence and then by diplomatic tension as the United Nations and Western powers condemned the occupation. By the time they started their march out of town, it was quite unclear exactly what the rebels gained in Goma. It was pretty easy to see what they'd lost, though.

The M23 rebellion traces its roots back to a peace deal signed on March 23, 2009 by the Congolese government and the National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP). The CNDP was a Rwandan-backed rebel group largely made up of former Congolese army soldiers who began an armed rebellion but then accepted a government offer to let them become a political party and integrate their troops back into the Congolese army. Now, three years later, a faction of the mutineers say that the government isn't keeping its promises and has renewed the uprising in the form of the M23 rebellion. They've so far been fighting for control of the resource-rich Kivu region, where Goma is a provincial capital.

The rebels seized Goma on November 20 without much resistance and have apparently sacked her sufficiently. Congolese government troops had fled, and United Nations peacekeepers stationed there look on as the rebels streamed into town. The M23 faction actually gained about 3,000 more troops in Goma, as both government troops and local police joined their cause. There are also reports that the rebels robbed the central bank in Goma and looted countless houses for valuables. For a time, the rebels held the airport, too, where millions of dollars worth of minerals like gold and coltan, which is used to make cell phones, are shipped out of the country every day. It's been reported that the leaders of M23 were offered top-ranking positions in the Congolese army in exchange for their peaceful retreat from the city, however government officials have insisted that they won't begin any negotiations in earnest until the M23 rebels are at least 12 miles away from Goma.

The M23 faction lost a few things in Goma, too. They apparently also let in a bunch of troops from Rwanda, who's reportedly providing support for the M23 faction, and really pissed off the United Kingdom in the process. On Thursday, the UK cut off $33 million worth of aid to Rwanda for its role in supporting the M23 rebels. Meanwhile, two more M23 leaders, Baudoin Ngaruye and Innocent Kaina, found themselves on the UN sanctions list. And somewhat out of the M23 rebels' control is the despicable behavior of the Congolese army who raised hell, when they were retreating from Goma. Said one local resident, "There was a lot of rape, a lot of insecurity, a lot of extortion and some killings. It was a mess, and people are worried about the same kind of thing happening when they come back."

There's a strong possibility that M23 will retreat from Goma only to be met with a surprise attack from the Congolese army. And there's not really any indication that a lasting peace agreement is in the cards. For now, the pieces are being moved around on the board, but barring any international intervention, there are no winners emerging.

Denver Broncos Brandon Stokley, Robert Ayers Questionable for Sunday's Game Versus Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Dec 1st 2012, 16:29

By Rich Kurtzman   The Denver Broncos are a mile high; currently riding a six-game winning streak and sitting a full four games in first place of their AFC West division.   And as they prepare to take on the 6-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they may be without at least two key players.

Wide receiver Brandon Stokley is an ageless wonder, playing in his 15th year as a professional. Over the years, he’s grown a great rapport with quarterback Peyton Manning that dates back to their days in Indianapolis, and the two are friends on and off the field. This season, Stokley’s been Manning’s go-to guy on third downs as a reliable receiver that the quarterback knows will convert on the all-important down. But Manning may not have his right hand man this Sunday, because Stokley injured his right wrist and hip during last week’s win in Kansas City. In the third quarter, the receiver went deep up the seem of the field and was hit hard just as the ball arrived, jumping up off the turf immediately, clutching his wrist in pain. He came back to play more in that contest, but he’s been a limited participant all week in practice and he’s officially “questionable” to play this Sunday. Although, Stokley doesn’t miss much game action, and he’ll have to really be hurting to sit Sunday.   Also “questionable” is backup defensive end Robert Ayers. Ayers has dealt with the loss of his father this week and went home to be with his family, missing all three practices. He’s been backing up Elvis Dumervil and getting into games, recording 12 tackles and a sack this season. The Broncos boast the best defensive line in all of football, sacking opposing quarterbacks 37 times total on the year, and Ayers is a rotational guy that gives them added depth at the position.   A third questionable player is backup tackle Chris Clark, who sees most of his playing time on special teams.   Of the other six players listed, all are listed as “probable” and expected to be ready to go at kickoff.   Offensive starters Chris Kuper (ankle) and Demaryius Thomas (knee) are crucial to the unit’s profound production, and it’s great news they will play, as will backup guard Manny Ramirez (back) and third-string tight end Virgil Green (hamstring).   The most optimistic news surrounds starting cornerback Tracy Porter, who’s battled with post-seizure symptoms all year. He practiced fully all week long and could finally make his way back to the field this week. Although, with the improved play of Tony Carter and Chris Harris, it’s unknown if Porter will have a starting spot to come back to.   Lastly, backup defensive lineman Malik Jackson (finger) may see increased time if Ayers does have to sit without any preparation.   Probable:   Tight End Virgil Green (hamstring) Defensive Lineman Malik Jackson (finger) Guard Chris Kuper (ankle) Cornerback Tracy Porter (illness) Guard Manny Ramirez (back) Wide Receiver Demaryius Thomas (knee)   Questionable:   Wide Receiver Brandon Stokley (wrist/hip) Defensive End Robert Ayers (not injury related)   For more Local Football Bloggers and the latest Broncos news, see CBS Sports Denver.

With his first year in power coming to a close, it's time for Kim Jong-Un to show off his strength as a leader, and what better way to do that than by blasting a giant rocket into the heavens? On Saturday, North Korea confirmed suspicions that it was preparing to launch another long-range missile between December 10 and December 22, around the the first anniversary of Kim Jong-Il's death, despite widespread criticism from the international community. The Unha-3 rocket is supposed to be launched "southward" from a base in Sohae, hopefully without dropping any debris on neighboring countries.

Nobody outside of North Korea sounds very excited about this missile lauch. South Korea called the plan "a grave provocation" and "a challenge to the international community" that would spark a "strong response." Japan said that it was going to work with South Korea as well as the United States and China to talk Kim Jong-Un down from the missile-firing platform. Meanwhile, diplomats  and experts explain that North Korea is simply trying to highlight discriminatory policies from the United States that allow South Korea to launch missiles but not North Korea.

An argument could be easily made that North Korea just isn't any good at launching long-range missiles. The country also stoked the ire of the diplomatic community in April, when it unsuccessfully launched a rocket from it Sohae base. It only few for a few seconds before breaking up and crashing into the ocean. The launch also cost North Korea a much needed food assistance program which the United States called off after the launch.

But no assistance for North Korea's starving citizens can compete with Kim Jong-Un's ego. "Kim Jong-un wants a demonstrable a feat to boost his legitimacy, and his technicians have assured him they are ready," John Delury, a North Korea expert at Yonsei University in Seoul, told The New York Times. "It doesn't hurt that South Korea is in the middle of a string of aborted efforts at launching a satellite of their own -- should Pyongyang succeed, it scores points in the ongoing inter-Korean rivalry, but also highlights what it sees as the hypocrisy of banning one Korea from doing what the other Korea does freely."

Add Laws of Subtraction to Your Reading List

I am a minimalist; things and brands and stuff really don't do anything for me.  My husband isn't.  This makes for an interesting life as he refuses to get rid of things and I find new, creative ways to eliminate the unnecessary.

What about you?  How do you feel about "stuff?"  Do you find yourself bringing more things into your house and not letting go of the old?  Do you find yourself thinking that the quality of something is defined by how much of it there is?  Are you a better, more successful business owner because you do more and work more?

Matthew May(@MatthewEMay), author of The Laws Of Subtraction Six Simple Rules For Winning In The Age Of Excess Everything, would say that excellence and elegance are found in less rather than more.

I received a review copy of the book and it came at the best time of the year – a time where we are all bombarded with messages to buy more and do more and be more.  I dug into the book with gusto and thought I'd share some of my impressions here with you.

A little Bit About Matthew May

You may already know Matthew from his writing on American Express Open Forum where he is a regular contributor.  He's also an accomplished author with three award-winning books under his belt: The Shibumi Strategy, In Pursuit of Elegance, and The Elegant Solution.   He is a popular speaker, creativity coach, and innovation adviser to companies such as Toyota and Intuit. He is also the founder of Edit Innovation, an ideas agency based in Los Angeles.

But his proudest moment was winning the New Yorker Magazine cartoon caption contest!  That is probably a great example of how Matthew lives his subtraction strategy lifestyle.

The Laws of Subtraction: A Mindset for Sanity and Success

In a world of multi-tasking and overwhelm, I think you're going to find respite inside the page of The Laws of Subtraction.  In the sharing of stories from his own experiences as well as those of several dozen of his professional friends and experts, you'll start to see a pattern emerge that just might lighten the load of what YOU think you need to be successful in your business and your life.

May outlines six simple rules and illustrates how companies like Toyota as well as some of the folks you're probably following on Twitter, like Jonathan Fields, approach subtraction as a success strategy:

  • #1: What isn't there can often trump what is.
  • #2: The simplest rules create the most effective experience.
  • #3: Limiting Information engages the imagination.
  • #4: Creativity thrives under intelligent constraints.
  • #5: Break is an important part of any breakthrough.
  • #6: Doing something isn't always better than doing nothing.

Laws of Subtraction Can Transform Your Business and Your Life

One of the things I really like about this book is that it straddles that space between teaching, informing and entertaining.  You'll find its insights applicable to all aspects of your business and your life.

For example, law #3 is, "Limiting information engages the imagination."  As an intro to this chapter, May gives a list of examples where you have to guess what links all these companies and situations and in all cases, it was using the strategy of limiting information to engage and entice the audience.  Just reading this made me stop and think about all the different ways that I can apply this strategy.

I think you'll have the same experience.

Is The Laws of Subtraction for You?

Of course, if you're a business book junkie like me, you will love this book.

It's got that addicting mix of name-brand company stories combined with the stories of small business experts who you may know and follow on social media combined with interviews with experts on all kinds of interesting topics.
