Fast Company:

Photovoltaic cells are best known for turning sunlight into electrical power—and they’re big business. But did you know that there’s a type of PV cell that eats heat instead of light to make power? It could replace the Li-ion battery in your cell phone, and it may also be used to scavenge waste heat from almost anything that normally dumps it into the environment, from your TV’s electronics to your car’s engine (even an electrical one).

Thermal PV tech has been around ages, and works the same way as the solar variation: Incoming radiation excites the atoms in its semiconductor structure, which then push electrons out—generating current. And much as is the case for solar PV cells, the advances in the tech have all been about improving their efficiency. Scientists at MIT have recently honed this tech, pushing the efficiency up so far that thermal PV cells are now a viable alternative to all sorts of other tech.

Dippin' Dots Aha Moment
Nov 1st 2012, 17:07

Have you ever wondered what inspired that frozen treat that we all know as Dippin’ Dots? The Chicago Sun-Times recently interviewed Curt Jones, the inventor of Dippin’ Dots, about his futuristic ice cream dots.

Q. How did family, friends and colleagues respond when you pursued your business idea?

A. “I took the frozen pellets to my neighbor, and she thought I was crazy. I took them to my boss — who was very entrepreneurial himself and started a business in a garage that is now about a $500 million-a-year company. . . . He said, ‘Oh, that’s a cute idea, Curt. Get back to work.’

“So for the next six months, once I got off work at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., I had the rest of the night and the weekends to work on my idea. I then quit my job. And my boss supported me.”

Q. How do you get your message to stand out?

A. In “the early days of Dippin’ Dots, my philosophy was: I have no money, but if I can get a spoonful of Dippin’ Dots in your mouth, you’re going to like it and you’re going to come back and buy it. So it was sample, sample, sample.”

The images of Sandy that are dominating the airwaves have morphed from darkened skylines and flooded subway tracks into a new kind of menace: long lines. From commuters waiting for buses that never come to drivers stuck on bridge exit ramps and clogged streets. But the most persistent images of the day are pictures that hearken back to the disastrous economic troubles of the 1970s: Cars waiting on endless lines for gasoline.

Unlike the usual problems seen when storms hit along the Gulf of Mexico, oil drilling and gas refineries were largely unscathed by Hurricane Sandy. But much like the "perfect storm" itself, Sandy created another perfect storm of events that crippled the gasoline infrastructure of the region. The problem is most evident in New Jersey, where highways play a greater role in the community and coastline businesses were hardest hit.

Why can't gas stations keep up with demand? Here are some of the reason:

  • Lack of working public transportation forces people to drive more.
  • Heavy traffic means cars use more gas to get where they are going.
  • Lack of electricity means more homes and businesses are relying on gasoline-powered generators.
  • Those business include gas stations that can't open due to power outages or flooding.
  • Fewer stations means more customers at those that are open.
  • When people do reach the pump, they buy way more gas than they normally would.
  • Gasoline distribution centers, which replenish the tanks at local stations, were also knocked offline. (They tend to be near coastlines and other transportation hubs.)
  • Railroads and streets are blocked or damaged, which means new supplies can't be delivered from the distribution centers that are working to local stations.
  • Ports are closed, which means more fuel can't make it to the region.

Each one of these issues by itself might make just a small dent in the supply and demand of gasoline, but when they all combine together it brings the whole system to a halt. The gas is out there, but it can't move around. One gas station closes and that puts a strain on others to keep up. The others run out of fuel more quickly, new deliveries aren't made, and soon the whole thing becomes a standstill. CNBC estimates that more than 80 percent of all New Jersey gas stations are currently closed and about half of New York City's.

As repairs are made and electricity is restored, the system (like everything else) will start to right itself. The good news is that gas lines have been mostly orderly and calm, but that levelheadedness won't last forever. People are getting impatient. Also, price is not a concern, because station owners are very conscious of laws against price gouging. However, a few pundits, like Matthew Yglesias, are arguing that we should be allowing "price gouging" because the market could help take care of this problem if only we would let it. It's a logical defense, but one that's hard to make when families with destroyed homes are paying $6 for a gallon of fuel.

Today in celebrity gossip: Annoying singer Chris Brown did another annoying thing, there's a huge gallery of famous people in Halloween costumes, and find out how the stars are weathering the post-Sandy world.

Last night was a night of mischief, of fun, of spooks and specters, of ghouls and giggles, and of Chris Brown and his friends dressing up as Middle Eastern guys with guns. Yeah they had fake beards and turbans and assault rifles and bullet sashes or whatever those things are called draped across their chests. The whole nine yards. Super cool, Chris. Man does this kid make it just about impossible to like him. He's always doing something awful that has violent undertones, isn't he? (Or, y'know, big loud overtones.) Stop it, Chris Brown. Or better yet, somebody else stop Chris Brown. Someone take him to a little house way out in the country and give him some food and water and just leave him there. Lock him inside if you have to. Because he's simply too aggravating  to be out here with the rest of us. I'm not even sure who a terrorist costume is offensive to exactly, but it is undeniably bad. And yes, yes maybe I'm being stereotypical in saying that they're terrorist costumes when they might simply be, I don't know, Middle Eastern people with guns costumes, but really that difference seems almost semantic at this point. Chris Brown is the worst, and that's the only fact we need to know about this. [E!]

Speaking of celebrity Halloween costumes, here is a huge gallery of celebrities in their costumes that is way more fascinating than it has any right to be. Of many highlights, surely the greatest is "Callista Flockhart and Harrison Ford dressed as nerds." It doesn't get weirder or better than that in my opinion. But I do urge you to explore for yourself and make your own judgments. You really won't regret it. Colton Haynes in skin-darkening makeup (again!) as Gandhi. Lance Bass in a weird and intense clown costume. Tons of sad Batmans. It's really something. Go, look! [Too Fab]

While some people enjoyed Halloween, others were enduring Hurricane Sandy blackouts. While many of us are still stuck in the dark, fancy celebrities who live in affected areas of lower Manhattan have fled uptown for power and comfort. It seems a lot of them are at the Mark hotel on the Upper East Side, according to a source close to Page Six, meaning some front desk agent at the Mark hotel is about to be fired. Celebrities shacking up at the hotel, which starts at about $600/night, include Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber (and their kids), Helena Christensen, Russell Crowe, Anna Wintour, Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Kelly Ripa, and Marc Jacobs. That's a pretty star-packed hotel! Do you think they have hallway pajama parties at night and talk about how rich they are? Do you think they prank each other by ordering room service to each other's rooms and then giggling behind their doors when they hear the confusion down the hall? "I didn't order this," says Russell Crowe, hurling a telephone at the boor bellhop holding the tray, while Anna Wintour, two doors down, giggles in her room with her ear pressed to the door. Sounds like fun. [Page Six]

Back to Halloween. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were seen holding hands and wearing creepy masks (or, excuse me, "freaky" masks, according to Us Weekly) at a Halloween party at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The couple showed up with Pattinson's friend Katy Perry (Rob, why?) who was dressed as Jane from Daria, which sucks because that's actually a really good costume and Katy Perry should not be wearing really good costumes, she should be wearing a costume that reflects her artistic persona, meaning something contrived and shallow. Jane from Daria is not that! Ah well. The important thing is that Rob and Kristen are holding hands again, even if in the picture it looks like he's angrily dragging her along rather than lovingly joined to her, their hands representations of their souls. They'll get there eventually. Give them time. Give them time, dammit! Meanwhile Katy Perry can go suck a lemon. That's what she can do. [Us Weekly]

Actors Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell quietly married in a small ceremony in California on Tuesday. Which, well, good for them for doing things quietly and all that, but really would there have been that much hubbub surrounding their wedding? They're popular, but c'mon. They're not Justin and Jessica. Ah well, good for them, I suppose. It's a bit sad that Evan will be single again once Jamie and I finally meet and run away to Bora Bora together, but I hope she enjoys her time with him now. That's all she can really ask for, I suppose. [People]

Evangelical virgin Tim Tebow is reportedly dating Catholic actress Camilla Belle. The two met at the Met Ball last spring and were recently spotted together at a place called Latitude 30 in Jacksonville, Florida. Belle previously dated another famous virgin (or he was at the time, anyway), Joe Jonas. So this new coupling ought to work well. They can drink soda and laugh and sometimes hug and watch movies and go for walks and, good god, dry hump like no two human beings have every dry humped before. The will start a forest fire with all the friction. Watch out, Florida. The Tebelle blaze is coming. Even if they're not. [Page Six]

The social media sphere is an increasingly noisy place, especially for brands. But hiding somewhere in the static are strong signals from companies reaching their customers in innovative ways. The Social Business Index from the Dachis Group provides a (free) real-time ranking of more than 30,000 global brands based on their social performance. Every week we're taking a tally of who's getting heard, what they're saying, and why it matters.

Look at that Disney move! We're going to be interested to see what happens to Disney's ranking in the coming weeks and see if its Star Wars purchase will give the company a bump. Also moving up, is Unilever—the company behind Dove and Ben and Jerry's. Here are the week's big movers outside of the Top 20:

We realize that feelings are mixed regarding VEVO and some may not even know what VEVO is other than that music thing. Regardless of those feelings the music video website moved up five spots this week thanks to its constant stream of new content and new videos. " Last week’s big news was UK’s People’s Choice Award, which is powered by Vevo," the Dachis Group's Allison Squires told us. "On Facebook, VEVO’s multi-media posts drive viewers to vote for their favorite video, and to talk about #VEVOPeoplesChoice on Twitter to spread awareness." As Squires adds, Tapping into the millions-strong, socially-savvy fanbases of Justin Bieber, Carly Ray Jepsen and Nicki Minaj with simple posts doesn't hurt either.

It's impressive for a league in a lockout to actually move up the ranks—the logic being, how can people be talking and engaged about something that isn't even happening.  But the NHL saw a boost in the rankings thanks to some big news from the New York Islanders. "The jump came after the New York Islanders (@NYIslanders) leveraged Twitter to announce that they would take out a 25-year lease at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. " the Dachis Group's Joe Pinaire told us. "Going strong from 7 AM to 11 PM, the Islanders’ social team tweeted ~25 times to keep followers in tune with the day’s press conference and surrounding hype," he added. Included in the tweets were stuff like Instagrammed pictures with Mayor Bloomberg, and shots of the owners.  Pinaire adds:

Kudos to the Islanders because they leveraged Twitter as a tool to provide followers with real-time reporting--one of the channel’s strong suits.  This real-time reporting is well appreciated by followers, as it breaks from the conventional and deliberate ways brands leverage Twitter to engage followers. A big announcement like this is perfect for this approach and big brands would be wise to follow suit when their next big event promo comes around.

And if there are businesses out there reading this, we reporters appreciate the real-time reporting too.

Photoshop nerds unite.  "While the brand continuously posts photoshopped images on Facebook, last week Adobe posted a ‘Thursday Throwback’ image of Alberto Seveso’s ESPN cover of Michaels Phelps in December 2008" Squires told us, adding that the image was one of the reasons Adobe moved up eight spots this week."Comments came in all different languages and discussed how amazing the image was, and how cool Photoshop is," she said. Currently the image has over 7,000 likes and close to 1,000 shares. "Adobe Photoshop has a passionate following of people who appreciate art, who voice their appreciation of well done pieces. The combination of a passionate fan base, talented artists and remarkable content proved to be a solid social equation," Squires told us.

Methodology: A project of the Dachis Group, a social business professional services group, the Social Business Index analyzes the conversations on social platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and others. The index, which currently covers approximately 25,0000 companies and 27,000 brands, detects behaviors and activities exhibited by these companies and analyzes their execution and effectiveness at driving outcomes such as brand awareness, brand love, mind share, and advocacy. The Atlantic Wire takes a snapshot of the rankings at the end of the day on Sundays.
