Dike's Goal Lifts Timbers In 1-0 Win Over Rapids
Sep 1st 2012, 20:34

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Bright Dike scored just before halftime and the Portland Timbers beat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 Friday night to get consecutive wins for the first time this season.

Dike broke free, took a beautiful cross from Sal Zizzo and blasted the ball into the net in the 45th minute. Dike, making his third consecutive start after spending part of the season on loan to the Los Angeles Blues of USL Pro, celebrated his goal with handspring-flip combination.

“Once we got the goal, we played well enough the rest of the way to get the win,” Zizzo said.

The Timbers (7-13-6) moved out of the Western Conference basement with the win, moving one point ahead of Colorado for eighth place.

The Rapids (8-17-2) lost their fourth straight and set a franchise record with an eighth-straight road loss. Colorado is 1-9-1 since beating Portland 3-0 on June 30.

On Wednesday, Akron coach Caleb Porter was named Portland’s new head coach effective next season. General manager Gavin Wilkinson has been serving as interim coach since John Spencer was fired July 9.

Portland seems to be benefiting from the more free-flowing attack Wilkinson has instituted. Wilkinson earned his first win as coach last Saturday when the Timbers defeated Vancouver 2-1 to end a winless streak that had reached eight games.

Even more noteworthy was the emergence of a stout Timbers defense, which earned a shutout for the first time since a draw against Houston on May 15.

“To get a shutout is always a good feeling,” said Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, who joined the team in a trade Aug. 7. “It means you are doing something right.”

The Rapids had won all three previous meetings between the clubs, scoring seven goals and allowing only one. The two teams meet again Wednesday in Colorado in the second leg of the home-and-home series.

Wired Severs Relationship with Jonah Lehrer
Sep 1st 2012, 20:31

Charles Seife, an associate professor in NYU’s science journalism program, was asked by Wired to review a selection of Jonah Lehrer's work after it was revealed he routinely plagiarized or fabricated quotes. What he found was a troubling consistency to Lehrer's mistakes.

Seife reviewed 18 out of a possible 252 posts Lehrer wrote for Wired's Frontal Cortex blog. Some of the posts were flagged by Wired editors as suspect, some were chosen randomly by Wired editors, and some were chosen by Seife to ensure Wired wasn't controlling the sample. Seife is a science journalism professor, and while he's written for Wired once or twice, he was ultimately one of the most qualified and unbiased people who could properly review Lehrer's work "to determine whether he recycled, fabricated, plagiarized, or otherwise breached journalistic ethics."

Siefe was originally asked to review the pieces for Wired, but when they decided not to publish his findings he took his work to Slate, who gladly obliged. Seife looked for problems with recycling, press release plagiarism, plagiarism, quotation issues, and factual issues in all of the posts. The only one he didn't find a problem with? "The Paradox of Altruism," from February 2012. Every other piece reviewed had one, or more, problems. Seife interviewed Lehrer to try and figure out why he routinely broke the rules, but the revealing hour and a half interview is under lock and key thanks to, of course, proper journalism ethics:

I interviewed Lehrer for an hour and a half to get his reaction, but I am unable to publish his comments. Unfortunately, in the setup to the interview, Wired.com, which set the ground rules for the interview, didn't make sufficiently clear that the discussion was not solely part of an internal investigation and that it could be made public. As a result, I can't quote Lehrer or even paraphrase what he told me. But what I can say is that a number of his responses to my questions made me suspect that Lehrer's journalistic moral compass is badly broken.

In short, I am convinced that Lehrer has a cavalier attitude about truth and falsehood. This shows not only in his attitude toward quotations but in some of the other details of his writing. And a journalist who repeatedly fails to correct errors when they're pointed out is, in my opinion, exhibiting reckless disregard for the truth.

Two weeks ago, a Wired spokesman said the magazine was reviewing Lehrer's work and "to date we have not come across anything that seems too troubling," when it was reveled he was still welcome there. Wired released a statement and said Seife's findings, "leaves us no choice but to sever the relationship," with Lehrer.

Broncos Bring Back RB Johnson To Practice Squad
Sep 1st 2012, 20:11

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – The Denver Broncos signed running back Jeremiah Johnson and six other players to their practice squad Saturday after they failed to make the 53-man roster.

The Broncos brought back defensive tackle Ben Garland, safety Duke Ihenacho, tight end Cornelius Ingram, wide receiver Greg Orton, nose tackle Sealver Siliga and guard Wayne Tribue.

They still have one spot available on their practice squad.

Johnson made a strong push for the regular roster but was the odd man out after former first-round pick Knowshon Moreno made a strong comeback from knee surgery.

Here's the President's Official Home-Brew Recipe
Sep 1st 2012, 18:12

After the petitions and the Freedom of Information requests, and a bit of a wait, the White House finally released their official beer recipe. Drink up, home brewers.

In the official blog post, they explain President Obama bought a home brew kit for the kitchen last year. They got tips from local brewers and some White House staff who do their own batches at home before finally settling on their own recipe. They released the recipes for the Honey Porter and the Honey Ale, and they admit there's an official White House Honey Blonde but the recipe is no where to be found. Free the Honey Blonde, too!

The reason honey is used in every recipe is because they're using honey taken from the official White House beehive on the South Lawn, also an Obama addition.

It is, as far as they know, the first beer brewed in the White House. Without further ado, the recipes:

The Honey Porter

Ingredients

  • 2 (3.3 lb) cans light unhopped malt extract
  • 3/4 lb Munich Malt (cracked)
  • 1 lb crystal 20 malt (cracked)
  • 6 oz black malt (cracked)
  • 3 oz chocolate malt (cracked)
  • 1 lb White House Honey
  • 10 HBUs bittering hops
  • 1/2 oz Hallertaur Aroma hops
  • 1 pkg Nottingham dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup corn sugar for bottling

Directions

  1. In a 6 qt pot, add grains to 2.25 qts of 168˚ water. Mix well to bring temp down to 155˚. Steep on stovetop at 155˚ for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, bring 2 gallons of water to 165˚ in a 12 qt pot. Place strainer over, then pour and spoon all the grains and liquid in. Rinse with 2 gallons of 165˚ water. Let liquid drain through. Discard the grains and bring the liquid to a boil. Set aside.
  2. Add the 2 cans of malt extract and honey into the pot. Stir well.
  3. Boil for an hour. Add half of the bittering hops at the 15 minute mark, the other half at 30 minute mark, then the aroma hops at the 60 minute mark.
  4. Set aside and let stand for 15 minutes.
  5. Place 2 gallons of chilled water into the primary fermenter and add the hot wort into it. Top with more water to total 5 gallons if necessary. Place into an ice bath to cool down to 70-80˚.
  6. Activate dry yeast in 1 cup of sterilized water at 75-90˚ for fifteen minutes. Pitch yeast into the fermenter. Fill airlock halfway with water. Ferment at room temp (64-68˚) for 3-4 days.
  7. Siphon over to a secondary glass fermenter for another 4-7 days.
  8. To bottle, make a priming syrup on the stove with 1 cup sterile water and 3/4 cup priming sugar, bring to a boil for five minutes. Pour the mixture into an empty bottling bucket. Siphon the beer from the fermenter over it. Distribute priming sugar evenly. Siphon into bottles and cap. Let sit for 1-2 weeks at 75˚.

The Honey Ale

Ingredients

  • 2 (3.3 lb) cans light malt extract
  • 1 lb light dried malt extract
  • 12 oz crushed amber crystal malt
  • 8 oz Bisquit Malt
  • 1 lb White House Honey
  • 1 1/2 oz Kent Goldings Hop Pellets
  • 1 1/2 oz Fuggles Hop pellets
  • 2 tsp gypsum
  • 1 pkg Windsor dry ale yeast
  • 3/4 cup corn sugar for priming

Directions

  1. In an 12 qt pot, steep the grains in a hop bag in 1 1/2 gallons of sterile water at 155 degrees for half an hour. Remove the grains.
  2. Add the 2 cans of the malt extract and the dried extract and bring to a boil.
  3. For the first flavoring, add the 1 1/2 oz Kent Goldings and 2 tsp of gypsum. Boil for 45 minutes.
  4. For the second flavoring, add the 1/2 oz Fuggles hop pellets at the last minute of the boil.
  5. Add the honey and boil for 5 more minutes.
  6. Add 2 gallons chilled sterile water into the primary fermenter and add the hot wort into it. Top with more water to total 5 gallons. There is no need to strain.
  7. Pitch yeast when wort temperature is between 70-80˚. Fill airlock halfway with water.
  8. Ferment at 68-72˚ for about seven days.
  9. Rack to a secondary fermenter after five days and ferment for 14 more days.
  10. To bottle, dissolve the corn sugar into 2 pints of boiling water for 15 minutes. Pour the mixture into an empty bottling bucket. Siphon the beer from the fermenter over it. Distribute priming sugar evenly. Siphon into bottles and cap. Let sit for 2 to 3 weeks at 75˚.

BRB, going to buy a beer kit. And a beehive.

Microsoft Introduces New SkyDrive Android App
Sep 1st 2012, 18:00

The Android app for Microsoft's cloud storage service SkyDrive is now available for download in Google Play. The service is already available in app form for both iOS and Windows phone, and the new Android version offers many of the same features of those existing apps.

The main purpose of the app is to give users access to their files stored with the service from their mobile devices. Users can view documents that others have shared with them, as well as their own recently used items. Users can also open files and upload files, including photos and videos, to the cloud from their phones.

In addition, the Android app allows users to create new folders, delete files, and share items with other users.

For business users who have Android devices, this new app will allow them access to their cloud-stored files from anywhere. Since more and more companies are using cloud storage, and Microsoft is a major player in the industry, this new offering is sure to impact many business owners and professionals.

SkyDrive received a complete re-design earlier this month to make it fit with the new Windows 8 user interface. This redesign came with a couple of new features, including drag and drop organization, instant search, a contextual toolbar, and more.

Microsoft has also made some other big changes recently, such as the rebranding of Hotmail to Outlook, in order to make all of its products consistent.

It may seem odd to some that Microsoft would create apps for its competing devices and operating systems, but it seems the company wants to make it as easy as possibly for more consumers to use the service, especially with such big name competitors as Apple iCloud and Google Drive.  Especially since Android is currently the most popular smartphone operating system, it makes sense that Microsoft would make a SkyDrive app available on this platform.

Microsoft says that the app works best with Android 4.0, but users of any device with Android 2.3 and above are able to run the SkyDrive for Android app.

North Korea and Iran Are Teaming Up
Sep 1st 2012, 17:44

North Korea and Iran are now beat friends, and they're going to help each other with a wide variety of science and technology projects because they have "common enemies."

According to state media, the two countries have signed an agreement that will see them "cooperate in research, student exchanges and joint laboratories, and in the fields of information technology, engineering, biotechnology, renewable energy, the environment, sustainable development of agriculture and food technology."

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was quoted saying the two countries have "common enemies, because the arrogant powers do not accept independent states," by Iranian state media when announcing the new partnership. There were rumors Kim Jong-Un would be in Iran this weekend, but he ended up not attending.

Who could their common enemies be? Well, neither country has been playing nice with the U.S. lately. There's been posturing and pressuring and cyber attacks. Both Iran and North Korea have nuclear programs the U.S. isn't happy about. Maybe with the new partnership, the next North Korean missile test won't break apart into a million little pieces.

Apple Wants Samsung's Galazy S III Off the Market
Sep 1st 2012, 16:29

Following their $1 billion legal settlement, Apple listed eight Samsung products they want taken off the market. Now, still unsatisfied, Apple's adding two of Samsung's biggest products to their kill list.

Apple Insider reports Apple has added the Samsung Galaxy S 3 and the Galaxy Note to their requested kill list. The complaint is separate from the settlement awarded a few weeks ago, so the judge can still rule against Apple here. Samsung could see a ban of some of the products and not others, depending on how the judge rules. Some of the phones on the original list were a few generations old, but taking them off the market would still hit Samsung's bottom line. The S 3 sold 10 million copies of the phone in its first three months on the market. It is Samsung's "flagship product," according to the amended complaint. The decision to add the Galaxy Note and S 3 to the kill list is notable, if only because Apple is slated to launch their new iPhone and a miniature iPad over the next two months. The S 3 is the iPhone's biggest threat in the market right now, and the Note would be one of the 8-inch iPad's biggest competitors.

Here's a commercial for the S 3:

And here's a video for the Note with James Franco:
